Did you see the programme on BBC2 last night about the online retailer Amazon? Of particular interest were the the contrasting views from those who saw Amazon as a serious threat to their business and those who’d built successful businesses BECAUSE of Amazon!

Here are some of headlines from the programme:

  • In the UK we do more online shopping than any other nation.
  • Amazon has 50% of this market, which equates to a turnover of 4.5BN.
  • This means that every man, woman and child in the UK spends £70 per year on Amazon.
  • The core principle of Amazon has been “start with the customer and work backwards”.
  • My favourite quote from the programme came from the UK CEO in response of those business owners who moan about sales attrition in the context of Amazon: “Complaining is not a business strategy”. He is so right!

So, what are the key messages here for veterinary practice? How can YOU super-charge your business by starting with the customer and working backwards? What can you do, specifically, to capitalise on the OPPORTUNITIES offered by the internet?

I await your comments with interest….
